MUSIC OF THE WEEK!

Jarrod Dickenson LIVE at the Motley this Sunday, April 18th!

He is a fabulous folk, acoustic, blues musician from Austin, Texas.

There are songwriters who come and go without ever really impacting our lives, and then there are songwriters whose words seem to bore straight into our souls, and never let go. Their songs bother us. They simply can’t go in one ear, and out the other. Rather, they have to be processed, slept on and digested. They are the kind of songs that tug at our hearts, and challenge our minds. Jarrod Dickenson is most definitely in the latter category. He will take you back in time to the days of The Great Depression and WWII with captivating stories of old. He’ll make you reflect on your own life with heart-wrenching songs of love lost, and he’ll remind you that somewhere in the midst of all the chaos there is still the hope of a brighter tomorrow. His songs have the unique ability of making you see what he is seeing, and feel what he is feeling. One merely has to listen to the raw emotion in his voice to know that Jarrod is not simply a fine story-teller, but also someone who has truly experienced that which he so powerfully sings of.

Where Does Our Coffee Come From?

The Motley gets all of our coffee from Klatch Roasting, a roasting company based in Upland CA. Klatch Roasting prides itself in selling top of the line coffee from all over the world. Named Roaster of the Year for 2009 by Roast Magazine, Klatch Roasting provides us with excellent coffee and continuous support in barista training and coffee expertise. We buy a variety of Fair Trade Organic (FTO) coffees along with direct trade coffees from them.

The NEW Motley Coffee Map!

· Café Femenino is a FTO coffee harvested in Guatemala by a co-op that is run by women. The cooperative is working to support the empowerment of women by providing jobs and training in coffee production and improvement of quality. It was awarded the 2003 Ecological Merit Award for efforts to protect endangered species.

· Blue Thunder is a blend of French Roast and Sumatra Blue Lintong. The beans are harvested in different regions and then roasted locally at the Upland Roastery. The Blue Thunder blend makes a strong, rich cup of coffee with smokey, sweet tones.

· Las Mercedes is a direct trade coffee from El Salvador that is also Rainforest Alliance certified. As part of the direct trade contract that Klatch Roasting has with Las Mercedes, 25 cents of every pound are given back to the community in the Cerro el Tigre region to support health, education, environmental programs. In Fall 2009 Lucia Ortiz, one of the farmers at Las Mercedes, came to the Motley to give a talk on the process that goes in to harvesting coffee beans. During her visit, Lucia shared pictures of all of the community projects that the Las Mercedes farm is currently supporting along with the efforts to provide jobs and training for El Salvadorian women.

· Regular and Decaf Espresso is harvested at a variety of farms around the world all of which are fair trade organic.

MUSIC MADNESS

This week is EPIC musicality at the Mot Mot.

We have LIVE MUSIC THREE DAYS this week.

TUESDAY: ELLIS!!!! Need I say more......I think not. Come see the Motley's Infamous Ball of Fire!

Wednesday: Kristine Tuna and A Book About Elephants. These are both FABULOUS musicians and you should all come!Listen here: http://www.myspace.com/kristinetuna and http://www.myspace.com/abookaboutelephants.

Kristine Tuna is Indie Acoustic Pop from Fullerton. She opened for Rachel Cantu when she played here and is coming back!

A Book About Elephants is acoustic from San Gabriel. She just released her first EP called "Milk the Moon," is out now on HUSH Records! And you can download it for free here: http://www.hushrecords.com/.

The show starts at 9!

Thursday: This will be a crazy night with FOUR different bands. This show starts at 730 because it is so long.

1. boxViolet is alternative pop rock out of LA.

Here is what some peeps have said about them:

"LA’s boxViolet exists in that New Wave machine world. Their music is sexy, poppy, and has just enough of an edge."—Palestra.net

"While still a relatively a new band, boxViolet's potential for hugeness is evident in any one of the ten gems on their debut album Cut and Come Again. Fans of Poe, Curve, and Garbage should be eating this album up."—LA Underground

Their myspace is: http://www.myspace.com/boxviolet

2. David Mix Band is Folk/Roots/Americana out of Mt. Baldy.
Woo local! This dude aparently got his start here in Claremont hanging around the Folk Music Center.

myspace: http://www.myspace.com/oftheland

3. Lea Grant lyrical acoustic rock out of San Francisco. Yay for the Bay!

Lea Grant earned her B.A. in Music at UC Santa Cruz in 2004. At Santa Cruz, her primary emphasis was opera. She continued classical training for several years after college, performing with SF Lyric Opera and International Orange Chorale. In 2006 her focus gradually began to shift back towards songwriting and performing her own compositions. She has spent the last few years actively pursuing a career as a performing songwriter, playing shows at local coffee houses & bars, writing up a storm, and finally, recording her debut EP, Earthbound which was released this February. Her music is hard to categorize but is characterized by complex piano accompaniment, unusual yet satisfying harmonic progressions, and above all, beautiful vocals.

Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/leagrantmusic

4. The New Planets are visual/experimental/melodramatic popular song group from L.A.

What might happen if the explosiveness of The Who met up with the unconventional arrangements and tonalities of Radiohead and then joined forces with the roof raising energy of Arcade Fire, bizarre theatrical craziness of The Flaming Lips, tender earthiness of Band of Horses and EPIC rock tendencies of Muse.

The Motley Has Sprouted a Tree of LOVE!

Over spring break the Motley elves were busy at work painting the newest addition to our lovely space: a beautiful mural that now lives in the servery behind the espresso bar.
The design committee, spearheaded by the ingenuity of senior barista, Amalia Nelson, created the image of the graphic tree and polled the Motley community on what words they believed embodies the Motley's space, its culture and its presence amongst Scripps. This grouping of words are now incorporated into the branches and leaves of the tree as friendly reminders of what the Motley means to us. Also, the tree has a special touch with the signature Motley mugs springing to life amongst the foliage. Come in and enjoy the beautiful art for yourself!Love,

The Mot

The NEW Addition to the Motley Family!

We now have beautiful wooden tables that were designed and built for the Motley by the master craftsman Del Cover of San Diego. In accordance with our mission statement, we wanted our tables to be another example of sustainable and environmentally conscious business practices.
So then…What makes these tables so special?

In 2003, the most powerful wildfires ever recorded in California swept through San Diego’s forests. Fires are vital to the natural cycles of forests and when allowed to naturally occur do not damage trees. However, prolonged prevention of fires caused irreparable damage to the forest, past the point of recovery. Fortunately, the dead trees could be recovered and were used to build these beautiful tables. The wood comes from a native tree, California incense cedar, which grows in abundance in the forests of the San Diego foothills. So our tables are not only re-purposing resources, but come from a local source!

Treat them with care so we can enjoy them for many years!

Love, The Motley

Food Revelation Recap

Over 200 members of our greater 5-C and Claremont community came together on Friday, February 19th to celebrate sustainable, local, and organic food. The Scripps' Environmental Club put on a fabulous dinner that showcased cuisine from the local health food store, Ecoterra, and an array of local, organic farms. A student documentary on the Mallott Commons was then screened to begin the discussion: What are we eating? How do we become active, conscious consumers?

Following the student documentary, we had a representative from Participant Films, the production company that produced Food, Inc. introduce the film to then be concluded with the film's engrossing journey through an examination of the food industry in the US. We wrapped up the evening with many different engaging discussions throughout the Motley for everyone to process the evening's educational material and consider what they can do to address the issues at hand!

Keep an eye out for more activism opportunities and educational events with the Motley and the Scripps' Environmental Club. There will be a follow up event occurring shortly!

Bringing Life into the Motley

We now have beautiful native succulent plants in the sitting room. The fabulous plants are in one-of-a-kind pots decorated by our own coffeehouse community. We hope that these lively, friendly plants will bring warmth and nature into our space!

Not only are these plants native to Southern California and are therefore more sustainable, but we bought them from the wonderful family-owned, small nursery down Foothill Blvd: Mt. Fuji Nursery. We are greening our business in more ways than one!

The New and Beautiful Brew Bar

As many of our loyal customers already know, we are now offering two options of drip coffee. If you're rushing off to class or simply want your coffee asap, we still have the older system of brewing one entire pot of coffee at a time. However, starting this semester we are offering another option of drip coffee made from the BREW BAR!

We switched over to this new method because we got a lot of feedback from all of you saying that you wanted our coffee to be more fresh. The Brew Bar is a pretty simple process - coffee is made one cup at a time by pouring hot water right over a filter filled with fresh coffee grounds. It takes an extra minute or two compared to the already brewed coffee but is worth the wait!

Along with improving the taste of your coffee, the brew bar allows us to offer more variety while cutting down on waste (we don't have to throw away extra brewed coffee every few hours any more!). Coffee has been brewed in this manner for years particularly in Japan and in countries in Europe, and it is just starting to make a more prominent appearance in coffee shops around the US. We're really excited about being able to offer you this option and we hope that you'll try one of our coffees from the Brew Bar the next time you come to the Motley!
